Indonesia’s grocery retail sector reached $101 billion in 2024, though it contracted slightly due to slowing consumer purchasing power and high operating costs. Traditional retailers, which still account for about 73 percent of the market, continued to decline, while supermarkets and hypermarkets also struggled amid store closures. Convenience stores, however, continued to expand as consumers favored nearby flexible shopping options, while food e-commerce also posted strong double-digit growth. Despite near-term challenges, Indonesia’s vast population of 282 million and rising middle class continue to make it one of Asia’s most promising markets, with growing demand for healthy, nutritious, and premium products.
